We have now gone bi-monthly

The magazine has now been live since December 2007 and has grown considerably since the first issue. Both Steve and I have been working flat out trying to produce the mag in our spare time, as we both work full time jobs as well as this publication. It has become more and more difficult to meet deadlines on a monthly basis and maintain a quality publication, so we have taken the decision to publish bi-monthly. This should enable us to improve the quality of the mag and to meet the deadlines, which may help us to bring in revenue from advertisers. I hope that you all enjoy the mag and that you will understand the reasons behind the changes. Issues will now be out 1st August, 1st October, 1st December and alternate months thereafter.

Petrol now over £5.00 a gallon

We are now paying over £5.00 for a gallon of unleaded petrol. That means we pay more per litre of fuel than the Americans pay per gallon. It was also announced by Mr Darling in the budget that they intend to put the fucking prices up by another 2p per litre in October. How the hell do the government justify the price of fuel, well they blame it on the oil companies? It has nothing to do with the 66% or so in tax that we already pay on every litre of fuel that we buy, it’s all the greedy oil companies. I admit that the price of crude oil has risen very sharply since the beginning of the year and that commodity prices have risen dramatically over the past 12 months, but why the hell do we have to pay so much in tax on it. We are already taxed to the hilt in indirect taxes, raised from speeding fines, parking fines and other motoring taxes, why the hell is the British motorist the target for the government every single time?

I remember the fuel protests in the late nineties, the rolling road blocks and the oil refinery pickets. The transport industry was worried about the rocketing cost of fuel and they were hated for their protests. Now look at the situation - they were right to protest, the cost of fuel has rocketed even more since the days of the protests. If we had all backed the haulage companies back then, maybe we wouldn’t be paying the prices we are today.

The cost of Tax on fuel is supposed to make us think more carefully about using our vehicles and therefore reduce pollution and improve the environment. What a load of bollocks! Who can afford to get rid of their car or bike and use public transport? Even if you were in a position to use public transport you couldn’t relay on it; the first sign of a leaf on the tracks they stop them running - and god help us if it snows!

The fact is the government knows that we ain't going to use public transport, that’s one of the reasons they won’t invest in them, they know that we will continue to use our cars and bikes and pay through the nose for the privilege. If they really believed that we would use our cars less by putting the cost of fuel tax up, why would they invest so much money in traffic congestion schemes? After all we would all be on public transport, right! Who the fuck do they think they are kidding.

So what can we do about it? We could all stop using our cars and bikes, but that would not really be practical. We could lobby parliament but would we be heard? We could organise protests similar to the ones organised in the nineties, but they are probably prepared for that one already. The only thing we can do is put up with the ever demanding tax man, go and get pissed and pay some more tax and put up with the situation. After to quote someone famous, there are only two thing in life that are guaranteed, death and taxes!!
